Great News 2026: Electricity Consumers in Pakistan Will Soon Choose Their Own Power Company!

There’s great news for electricity consumers in Pakistan who are tired of high bills and poor service! The Power Division Secretary, Dr. Fakhar Alam, has announced that people will soon have the freedom to choose their own electricity company instead of relying on just one provider.
This new system will start in January 2026 and will first apply to those using up to one megawatt of electricity.

Key Announcement from the Power Committee
The update was shared during a meeting of the National Assembly Standing Committee on Power, chaired by Muhammad Idrees. Officials discussed Pakistan’s power supply, infrastructure, and the overall condition of the electricity sector especially the problems faced in Karachi.
During the meeting, MNA Shahida Rahmani pointed out that Karachi depends only on K-Electric, which has created a monopoly. She said this has led to frequent power cuts, overbilling, and poor service for citizens.

New Open Market System for Electricity
According to Dr. Fakhar Alam, the government is launching an open market electricity system. This means consumers will be free to choose their electricity supplier, just like they choose their mobile or internet network.
He added that a special forum will be held in Karachi to bring private companies into the new system. This move aims to boost competition, improve service quality, and lower electricity costs for everyone.
Efforts to Reduce Losses and Circular Debt
Dr. Fakhar Alam also shared details about ongoing reforms in the power sector. He said that while some distribution companies (DISCOs) still have higher losses than the limits set by NEPRA, these losses are not added to consumer bills. Instead, they contribute to the circular debt, which the federal government covers.
The good news is that circular debt hasn’t increased in the last three years. Power losses have dropped from Rs. 600 billion in 2024 to Rs. 397 billion in 2025 — a major improvement. The government is now working to further reduce losses and increase efficiency through new reforms.
Smart App to Resolve Billing Complaints
One of the biggest complaints from electricity consumers in Pakistan is extra or wrong billing. To fix this issue, the government has launched a smart complaint app.
This app allows users to submit billing complaints online and receive quick responses. It’s designed to make the entire process faster, easier, and more transparent for everyone.
A Brighter Future for Electricity Consumers
With these reforms, electricity consumers in Pakistan will soon enjoy more control, better transparency, and improved service quality.
Allowing people to choose their electricity company is a historic step that will encourage competition, reduce costs, and create a brighter and fairer energy future for Pakistan.
